Inverter Plasma Dials
Often the inverter that supplies the plasma foils with power breaks down.
A clear symptom of a defective inverter is dark speedometer foil, while the small light bulb at the top of the instrument cluster still illuminates the mechanical odometer.
Be careful, the light bulb could also be defective!
With the help of the following flowchart, the error can be found relatively easily:

If the inverter is defective, it must be replaced with a new one.
Original inverters are no longer produced by the manufacturer.
There are various replica inverters available for purchase from the usual electronics mail order companies,
From experience, I can say that the quality is sometimes very poor. Some inverters last, others break after a short time.
Others work, but have an increased power requirement. This causes the circuit board on which the inverter sits to overheat and the circuit tracks to burn out.
The following picture shows such heat damage:

Since there is relatively little space for the inverter in the speedometer housing, many parts from the accessories trade do not fit in.
Inverters are calculated according to the size of the illuminated area, in our case this is a total of around 220 cm².
Most universal inverters that still fit on the original circuit board are only approved for up to 150 cm².
Another important figure is the frequency of the output voltage. The higher the frequency, the further the color spectrum shifts from the original green towards turquoise, then blue.
The original inverter has 400 Hz, universal ones usually 700-800 Hz.
The result is a mixed interior lighting of switches and clock that light up green and plasma foils that then light up turquoise blue.
In addition, a dimmer is installed that reduces the input voltage to adjust the brightness, but not all inverters are approved for variable supply voltages.
For this reason, I looked for and found a suitable solution.
Replica inverter available exclusively from Cossieparts:
-Small, powerful and a perfect fit
-Output frequency 400Hz like the original
-Dimmable via the original controller
1:1 exchange, without further adjustments
The design with two individual inverters makes the system redundant; if one inverter fails, the speedometer still lights up with reduced power but does not fail completely.
Note:
There are 2 different inverters:
V93AB-10C956-AA
V94AB-10C956-AA
From model year 94, the speedometer housing was changed and additional warning lights were added (airbag). Due to this change, the shape of the inverter board also had to be adapted. The inverters themselves are identical.

The original inverter is of very good quality and rarely fails.
I only recommend replacing it if it is definitely defective .
To replace it, the instrument cluster must be removed, opened and all measuring instruments removed.
Then remove the circuit board with the inverter.
Desolder the defective component and replace it with a new one.
Then put everything back together.
Price per inverter is 28.- sFr.
